Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things

Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, 2020

Working alongside independent writer and curator Robin Muir, I designed this major exhibition. Being given creative freedom I tried to invent mini stage-sets within the exhibition and took inspiration from Cecil Beaton’s own photographic sets and props.

“You really could not have done a better job. You transcended our initial thoughts — which were grandiose enough — to produce something that might actually have given Cecil himself reason to pause and wonder.”

Robin Muir

“Walls are decked with swags and pilasters and painted in modish colours from the time: chiefly seafoam green and Dior grey. Some feature Beaton-esque motifs–gold spots, pink stripes, the sets he designed for his photographs. You travel from one beautiful thing to another. It is inventive, coherent and quite mesmerising.”
